Stargate Atlantis, Whispers (season 5, episode 7).
By Seb O'LearyFounderHalloween: the 14 Stargate episodes that are (actually) scary
Stargate isn't a horror show. And yet, across its 353 episodes, there are creatures in the dark, villages that sacrifice the possessed, and bugs nobody else can see. Fourteen episodes to watch on the 31st, lights off.
Stargate was never a horror show.
It's adventure, science fiction, often funny, sometimes military. You explore planets, you take down false gods, you save Earth once a season. Nothing that should keep you up at night, in theory.
And yet, across 353 episodes, the franchise allowed itself a few detours into the dark. Creatures you hear but never see. Villages that sacrifice the possessed. Bugs that only exist in your field of vision. Corridors where the lights go out, one bulb after another.
So for Halloween, we sorted through them. Not the best episodes, not the highest rated: the ones that make you want to check the front door is locked.
Fourteen episodes. Eight from SG-1, five from Atlantis, one from Universe. Every title links to its page on the site, so you can rate it once you've watched it. And if you only have one evening, the box at the end gives you the perfect order.
SG-1: when the Gate opens onto the dark
SG-1 is ten seasons and more than two hundred episodes. Enough for the writers to drop the space opera every now and then and play with horror movie tropes. Eight times, they did it particularly well.
Bane · season 2, episode 10

Image: TMDb.
On an unknown planet, Teal'c gets stung by an insect. Nothing serious, at first: a sting, a bit of fever, back to the SGC to get patched up.
Except the fever doesn't go down. And what starts growing inside Teal'c is no longer very human, or very Jaffa. Within hours, the toughest warrior on the team becomes the threat.
It's old-school body horror, the kind that plays on slow transformation and fear of contagion. One of the show's very first real "monsters", aired in 1998, and it still works. Watch it for Christopher Judge, who plays the metamorphosis completely straight.
Demons · season 3, episode 8

Image: TMDb.
A village that seems straight out of the Middle Ages, a young woman about to be sacrificed because she's believed to be possessed, and a "demon" prowling the woods and carrying villagers away.
When SG-1 shows up, things quickly turn against them. To the village leader, these strangers from nowhere, with their weapons and odd manners, must be possessed too. And here, everyone knows how the possessed are dealt with.
Superstition, fanaticism, a creature in the forest, a village gripped by fear: it's probably the most Halloween episode of the entire show. And the real chill doesn't only come from the monster, but from what fear makes people do.
The First Ones · season 4, episode 8

Image: TMDb.
An archaeological team makes a major discovery: a planet where Goa'uld symbiotes still live in the wild, in the water. And with them, the Unas, the very first race to serve as their hosts, long before humans.
Daniel is soon abducted by one of them. SG-1 has to find him among caves, swamps and forest, where any pool of water could hide a symbiote ready to take over a body.
The episode goes all in on the creature-in-the-woods angle, before taking a more surprising turn. Above all, you discover that the threat isn't always the one you think, and that the "monster" sometimes has more to say than you'd expect.
The Curse · season 4, episode 13

Image: TMDb.
Daniel's old archaeology professor dies in a mysterious lab explosion. Daniel goes back to the academic world he left behind, the one that laughed at his theories about the pyramids.
There he runs into old acquaintances, and a canopic jar that should never have been opened. What was inside was no ordinary relic.
An Egyptian curse, an object nobody should have touched, a museum: Stargate revisiting the great mummy-movie classics without ever leaving Earth. Perfect for anyone who loves it when the show plays with its Egyptian roots.
The Tomb · season 5, episode 8

Image: TMDb.
The Russians have lost a team. It vanished inside a ziggurat on a distant planet, and SG-1 is sent with them to find it.
Inside: narrow corridors, traps, bodies. And something that hunts in the dark. Meanwhile, distrust between the two teams grows, because the Russians aren't telling everything about what they came for.
The ultimate closed-room episode. No way out, you can barely see a thing, and the tension rises with every step. If you like Alien or catacomb movies, this one's for you.
Nightwalkers · season 6, episode 5

Image: TMDb.
Carter, Teal'c and Jonas investigate the death of a scientist with ties to the Goa'uld. The trail leads them to a quiet little town where everyone looks perfectly normal.
By day, at least. Once night falls, the residents behave very strangely, and the whole town seems to share a secret nobody will admit to.
A small town, residents who come out at night, an investigation on Earth far from the Gate: it feels like an X-Files episode, and that's a compliment. One of the rare SG-1 episodes that plays almost like a body snatchers movie.
Sight Unseen · season 6, episode 13

Image: TMDb.
SG-1 brings an Ancient device back to the SGC. Soon after, giant bug-like creatures start appearing in the corridors of the base.
The catch: nobody can touch them, and not everyone can see them. Those who do look like they're losing their minds. And the phenomenon doesn't stay locked inside Cheyenne Mountain.
Pure paranoia. Who sees what, who's losing it, and who's telling the truth? An episode built on a simple, effective fear: seeing something nobody else can.
Uninvited · season 10, episode 5

Image: TMDb.
On a mission with SG-3, Teal'c runs into a savage creature slaughtering the people of a planet. SG-1 investigates and finds out a parasite is to blame.
Everyone immediately suspects the Ori, the enemy of the final season. But the real cause is going to surprise the team a lot more. And when the creatures start showing up elsewhere, the episode turns into a full-blown monster movie.
Proof that in its tenth season, SG-1 could still scare you, with just the right mix of nerve and humor to make it a really fun watch.
Atlantis: the city that was afraid of the dark
Atlantis always had a darker side than its big sister. Its enemies, the Wraith, feed on human life, and the Pegasus galaxy is full of abandoned worlds. The perfect setting for five episodes to watch with the lights off.
Hide and Seek · season 1, episode 3

Image: TMDb.
Atlantis has barely been found. During a game of hide-and-seek, an Athosian child accidentally opens a container sealed by the Ancients. Out comes a black cloud, harmless at first sight.
Then the trouble starts. The city's systems fail one after another, and the team realizes the creature is feeding on Atlantis's power. The more it eats, the bigger it gets.
A shadow roaming the corridors and shutting everything down in its path: fear of the dark, Ancient style. Meanwhile, McKay tries a gene therapy that gives him the Ancient gene, with the consequences you'd expect. The perfect way to ease into the night.
Instinct · season 2, episode 7

Image: TMDb.
Sheppard, McKay, Teyla and Ronon reach a village at dusk. The terrified villagers insist they spend the night indoors. Because after dark, a killer stalks the forest and drains the life out of its victims.
The team instantly guesses what they're dealing with: a Wraith. Except the story of this village, and of what hides in its woods, is a lot more complicated than that.
An isolated village, fear of the night, a monster in the forest: it's Atlantis's dark fairy tale. An episode that scares you, then breaks your heart.
Phantoms · season 3, episode 9

Image: TMDb.
An Atlantis team, sent to study a strange energy source, stops checking in. Sheppard goes looking for them on a planet where that anomaly blocks all radio contact.
There he finds the bodies of Genii soldiers who seem to have killed each other. And very soon, his own men start seeing things that aren't there, until nobody knows who's a friend and who's an enemy.
One of the darkest episodes of Atlantis, where the ghosts of Sheppard's past finally catch up with him. Fewer creatures, more psychological tension: here, the enemy is in your head.
Doppelganger · season 4, episode 4

Image: TMDb.
On a jungle planet, Sheppard touches a glowing crystal. Nothing happens, apparently. But back on Atlantis, team members start having nightmares.
Always the same ones, always with Sheppard in them, as the tormentor. And the nightmares have very real consequences when you wake up. The team has to find a way to drive this thing out before someone dies in their sleep.
It's Stargate's Freddy Krueger. And watching Joe Flanigan, the show's likeable hero, turn into the bogeyman is genuinely unsettling.
Whispers · season 5, episode 7

Stargate Atlantis, season 5, episode 7.
Exploring abandoned catacombs on an uncharted planet, an Atlantis team stumbles on one of the secret labs of Michael, the human-Wraith hybrid who became one of the city's worst enemies.

Michael's lab. Stargate Atlantis, season 5.
Then the fog rolls in. And something lives in that fog: the results of Michael's experiments, which hunt as soon as the mist rises. The team ends up trapped in the dark, listening to the whispers around them.
Probably the most openly horror episode in the whole franchise. Fog, whispers, creatures, tombs: here, Atlantis fully embraces the genre, right down to the directing and the lighting. Save this one for the end of the night.
Universe: fear without a monster
Universe was always the darkest and most realistic of the Stargate shows. A crew lost at the other end of the universe, with no way home: dread is already part of the scenery.
Time · season 1, episode 8

Image: TMDb.
The crew recovers a Kino, one of Destiny's small flying cameras, from a jungle planet. On it: recordings. Footage of the crew, on that very planet.
Except they never lived through what it shows. And what it shows is anything but reassuring.
Partly shot as found footage, Blair Witch style, it's the most disorienting episode on the list. You barely see the threat, and that's exactly what makes it so oppressive. If you only watch one, it might be this one.
So, which one scared you?
We've surely forgotten some. An episode that kept you up at night, a creature that still haunts you, an SGC corridor you never looked at the same way again.
