Demons is episode 8 of season 3 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1999.
A medieval Christian village lives in terror of the demon: an Unas in Sokar's service, who regularly comes to collect his tribute of marked victims. SG-1 arrives in the middle of a witch hunt and ends up accused in turn, caught between a fanatical canon and petrified villagers. The real fight isn't against the monster, but against fear.
Why it matters to the mythology
Sokar recruits even on transplanted Christian worlds, and the Unas is a reminder that the Goa'uld's first hosts haven't disappeared.
The review
Stargate takes on religious obscurantism head-on, and doesn't pull its punches: the canon who drowns a girl to prove she's possessed remains one of the harshest scenes in the series. The symbiote-boosted Unas is a fine physical threat, but it's human fanaticism that chills the blood. A bit schematic in places, but brave and effective.
