The Tomb is episode 8 of season 5 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2001.
A ziggurat on P2X-338, a missing Russian team, and a mummy that should never have been opened: SG-1 and Russian soldiers descend together into the tomb of Marduk, a Goa'uld so abominable that his own priests sealed him in alive with a devouring creature. The sarcophagus kept him alive while it ate him. And someone has reopened the box.
Why it matters to the mythology
The first joint mission with the Russians, amid pain and mistrust: the program officially becomes international.
The review
Stargate does its own mummy movie, and the atmosphere is a triumph: dusty corridors, torches, a cursed sarcophagus, all the trappings embraced with delightful earnestness. Marduk's fate, devoured on a loop for centuries by the beast he was given, is the most baroque horror idea in the series. The Russian-American cooperation grinds just the right amount. An excellent Halloween episode.
