Beast of Burden is episode 7 of season 5 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2001.
Chaka has been kidnapped by slave traders: on this world, the Unas are beasts of burden, broken with sticks for generations. Daniel sets out to free him and discovers the unthinkable: humans, once slaves of the Goa'uld, who have become slavers in turn. Chaka, for his part, discovers the word freedom, and he won't forget it.
Why it matters to the mythology
Chaka chooses to stay and lead the Unas uprising: the series launches a war of emancipation it will follow from a distance.
The review
The season's most openly political episode: slavery passed down like an ordinary inheritance, by people who were once livestock themselves. Daniel loses his illusions as a negotiator, his mediation fails in bloodshed, and the series is honest enough not to prove him right. Chaka's final look, as he chooses revolution over a return to comfort, is worth more than any speech. Rough, without a clean solution, necessary.
