Rite of Passage is episode 6 of season 5 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2001.
Cassandra is sixteen, feverish, and has a magnetic power that grows along with her: Nirrti's retrovirus had been lying dormant in her genes since childhood. The mad geneticist turned an entire village into a multigenerational laboratory, and she's back to check the results. Fraiser will have to choose between her oath and her adopted daughter.
Why it matters to the mythology
Nirrti is unmasked and captured... then released in exchange for a cure: the deal will haunt the series. And Cassandra grows up before our eyes.
The review
The Cassandra sequel the series owed its fans, and it hits the mark: the rescued child has become an angry teenager, and Janet Fraiser finally gets an episode worthy of her, a mother before a doctor, ready to hold Nirrti at gunpoint in her cell. The final deal, letting a monster go to save a kid, deliberately leaves a bitter taste. The series owns the fact that some victories look like clean defeats. Solid and moving.
