Between Two Fires is episode 9 of season 5 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2001.
Impregnable Tollana suddenly offers to share its ion cannons with Earth: the gift is so generous it reeks of a trap. Behind the scenes, Tanith is dictating terms to Chancellor Travell: the Tollan have lost their life insurance, and a new enemy has ships their cannons can't even scratch. Narim will choose the truth, and his world will pay for it.
Why it matters to the mythology
The fall of Tollana, the first great allied civilization wiped off the map, heralds the arrival of Anubis without naming him.
The review
The episode that shocked fans: the series coldly destroys one of its pet peoples to set up a threat that doesn't yet have a name. Travell's gradual corruption, a politician selling her soul out of realism, is chillingly believable. Narim, lovestruck and whistleblower, gets a tragic exit worthy of him. You switch off the TV wondering who could possibly make the Tollan tremble, and that question is worth all the gold of the season.
