The Goa'uld who turned an outstretched hand into a stab in the back, and Teal'c's sworn enemy.
Overview
Tanith is betrayal in Goa'uld form. Handed over to the Tok'ra as part of an alliance, this parasite lodged in a Jaffa's body took advantage of the trust placed in him to spy, then switched sides at the worst possible moment. For Teal'c, it would become very personal.
History
The Tok'ra believed they had a Goa'uld under surveillance, ready to cooperate. In reality, Tanith was putting on an act, gathering their secrets and preparing his escape. His betrayal comes at a high price, and it strikes straight at the heart: he is the one who causes the death of Shan'auc, the Jaffa woman Teal'c loved.
From then on, Teal'c has only one thing on his mind. Tanith, meanwhile, climbs the ranks in the service of Apophis and then Anubis, believing himself untouchable.
But his run comes to an abrupt end against a Jaffa who forgot nothing and was biding his time. A patient revenge, equal to the betrayal.
Origins
The name Tanith refers to Tanit, the great goddess of Carthage, the Phoenician city in North Africa. Goddess of the sky, the moon, fertility and war, she was the city's protective deity and the consort of the god Baal Hammon.
In Carthage, her cult grew so large that it eventually eclipsed that of Baal himself. People prayed to her for prosperity, fertility and victory, and her emblem, the famous sign of Tanit, adorned sanctuaries across the ancient Mediterranean. Even today, she remains a powerful symbol in Tunisia.
A strange fate for the name of a protective goddess: the Goa'uld who bears it turned out to be nothing but a traitor without a shred of loyalty.
