Phantoms is episode 9 of season 3 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2006.
On a forest world, an abandoned Wraith machine broadcasts fear: the team, caught in its field, sinks into hallucinations, each reliving their worst memory. Sheppard goes back to Afghanistan, friends point rifles at each other, and the rescue mission turns into survival against their own ghosts... and against their comrades' very real bullets.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: Sheppard's military past dug up, and a demonstration of Wraith psychological warfare.
The review
An effective mental-fog episode in which the threat is only the lever: what matters is what each person sees. Sheppard's Afghanistan, mentioned since the pilot, finally takes shape, and the friendly fire between heroes brings an unusual tension; McKay wounded by Sheppard is something that leaves a mark. The mechanism gets a little repetitive over the length, but the idea that the Wraith weaponize terror itself is perfectly in tone. A good psychological pick.
