The Return (Part 1) is episode 10 of season 3 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2006.
An Ancient ship emerges from the intergalactic void: a crew of original Lanteans, on their way for ten thousand years, is coming home. The joy is short-lived: the owners take back their city, politely and completely, and the entire expedition is sent back to Earth. Everyone scatters into lives that have lost their flavor, until the news that changes everything: the Asurans have attacked Atlantis.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Ancients take back the city and then lose it: the expedition's forced exile proves by absurdity that Atlantis has become ITS home.
The review
An episode of mourning disguised as a homecoming: watching the team drift through offices on Earth, McKay at Area 51, Sheppard babysitting a site, says better than any speech what Pegasus has done to them. The Lanteans, courteous and distant, are a brilliant disappointment: our founding gods turn out to be administrators. And O'Neill as a courtesy visitor at the worst possible moment adds an extra crossover pleasure. The table is overturned with mastery.
