The Return (Part 2) is episode 11 of season 3 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2006.
The Asurans hold Atlantis, the Lanteans are dead, and O'Neill and Woolsey are surviving in hiding in the city's bowels. Against Earth's direct orders, the old team mounts the most insubordinate operation in its history: taking back the city from an army of machines, six of them, with jumpers, explosives and intimate knowledge of every corridor.
Why it matters to the mythology
The city is retaken and the expedition reinstated: no one will ever again dispute who Atlantis belongs to. Niam, for his part, is floating somewhere.
The review
The exhilarating reconquest the exile was calling for: the team as burglars of their own home, open disobedience included, delivers the season's most enjoyable action episode. O'Neill as the Replicators' sarcastic hostage steals every scene he's in. The plan, playing the city like an instrument they know by heart, validates ten years of mythology: legitimacy comes from use. A two-parter that closes the Lantean interlude with panache.
