Echoes is episode 12 of season 3 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2006.
The planet's whales converge on Atlantis by the thousands, and their songs give visions to anyone who comes near them: images of burns, of deaths, of a city in flames. These aren't hallucinations but archives: the creatures are replaying the warning they learned thousands of years ago, because the sun is preparing a flare that will sterilize the hemisphere.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: the whales of Atlantis earn their stripes as the planet's living memory, and the city narrowly avoids a solar barbecue.
The review
A nice naturalistic science fiction idea: the planet's fire alarm is an animal species, and the message is ten thousand years late for its recipients. The mystery builds well, between bleeding ears and end-of-the-world visions, and the final solar countermeasure embraces its big spectacle. A seasick McKay remains a reliable comic bonus. No lasting consequences, but a certain elegance. A pleasant contemplative vintage.
