The object that gives the whole saga its name. A giant ring, millions of years old, capable of opening an instant passage to the other side of the galaxy. You step through here, you come out on another world. The whole adventure starts with it.
Overview
The principle fits in a single image. You dial an address, the ring lights up, a blue puddle forms at its center, and you walk through. On the other side is another planet. No ship, no years-long voyage: one step, and you're somewhere else. It's the Ancients' most brilliant invention.
Its story
A gate on its own isn't enough. It needs a DHD, a dialing device that supplies the power and stores the addresses. On Earth, the DHD was lost. So the Tau'ri did what they do best: they rigged up an entire computer system to dial in its place. A feat that made the whole program possible.
The Stargate isn't just a means of transportation. It's a door onto the unknown, onto civilizations, dangers, wonders. Every time it opens, anything can happen. It's what turns a military base buried under a mountain into a window open onto the entire universe.
How it works
Each gate bears a series of symbols, which are constellations. Locking in a specific combination dials an address to another gate in the network. Seven symbols for a destination within the galaxy, nine to go much farther. The wormhole only works one way: you go in one side and come out the other, never the reverse.
