Concept

The Ninth Chevron

The address that leads to Destiny

Chevrons in an address: 7 (galaxy), 8 (another galaxy), 9 (Destiny)
Power required: Colossal (a world like Icarus)
Destination: The ship Destiny

A Stargate has nine chevrons, but almost no one ever uses that many. Seven are enough to travel within the galaxy, eight to reach another galaxy. The ninth is a door to a mystery: it does not designate a place, but a ship launched by the Ancients to the far reaches of the universe.

Overview

The ninth chevron remained an enigma for years. Where a standard address designates a destination, this one forms a kind of unique code that requires an extraordinary amount of power. It takes an entire world with a naquadah-rich core, like Icarus, just to attempt to establish it.

History

When the sequence finally succeeds, the Stargate does not open onto a planet, but onto Destiny, an Ancient ship that set out millions of years earlier to explore the universe. That is the whole premise of Stargate Universe: a handful of survivors thrown aboard a ship they do not control, far from home.
