An army of unmanned machines, programmed to hunt Destiny and destroy all advanced intelligence.
Overview
In Stargate Universe, Destiny runs into a purely mechanical threat: swarms of drones, launched by a huge command ship, that destroy everything that thinks and everything that flies. Relentless, tireless, with no negotiation possible.
History
You do not reason with the drones. They are machines, released by a mothership, designed to detect and annihilate any advanced technology. Destiny and her crew become just another target, hunted from jump to jump, without respite.
The worst part is their persistence. Destroy one swarm, and the command ship sends out more, and it always ends up picking up Destiny's trail again. The crew has to outsmart them, hide, flee, because brute force will never be enough against a threat that never sleeps and never gives up.
A faceless enemy, without hatred and without a leader to take down: just an order, etched in metal, carried out to the very end.
Origins
The drones embody one of the great fears of our time: war handed over to machines that decide, on their own, matters of life and death. What the military now calls lethal autonomous weapons systems, and what the general public has nicknamed "killer robots."
The danger is anything but theoretical. Machines capable of choosing and striking their targets without human intervention are already in development, to the point that organizations like Human Rights Watch are calling for them to be banned. Because a machine that kills without any human making the decision raises a dizzying question: who, then, is responsible for the death it deals?
The drones that hunt Destiny take this logic to its conclusion: an automated war that goes on by itself, long after the reason for the conflict has disappeared. The dread of an endless war, waged by weapons no one controls anymore.
