- The SGC's dialing computer

The Stargate's remote control. Without this big console covered in symbols, there's no easy way to dial an address. And the day Earth found itself without one, it took a real stroke of genius to do without it.
Overview
The DHD is the Dial Home Device, the console that accompanies every gate. It does two things: it supplies the power needed to open the wormhole, and it stores the addresses of other worlds. Pressing its symbols is like dialing a phone number on a galactic scale. Simple, elegant, designed by the Ancients.
Its story
Except that Earth's gate arrived without its DHD. A detail that could have stopped everything. Instead, the scientists hooked the gate up to a computer capable of calculating and locking in addresses manually. It's slower, riskier, sometimes temperamental, but it's that stroke of jury-rigged genius that made the entire Stargate program possible.
