The engine that crosses interstellar distances by plunging into hyperspace. The hyperdrive is the key to traveling between the stars, the thing that makes galactic war possible.
Overview
Without a hyperdrive, there's no travel between the stars: the distances are simply too great. By opening a window into hyperspace, a parallel dimension, ships shorten journeys that would otherwise take centuries.
Every great civilization has its own version, some faster than others.
History
Not all hyperdrives are created equal: those of the Asgard or the Ancients far outshine the Goa'uld's, which is itself much better than the first engines Earth cobbled together.
Speed in hyperspace becomes a major strategic stake: getting there first, running faster than the enemy. The hyperdrive is the unsung backbone of the saga's entire space war.
