The secret corridor of starships. To cross the distances between the stars, you don't fly straight ahead: you dive into hyperspace, a parallel dimension where distance doesn't work the same way. It's what makes space travel possible in Stargate.
Overview
Traveling from one system to another at normal speed would take entire lifetimes. Hyperspace is the solution: a separate dimension a ship can slip into to cover colossal distances in a fraction of the time. You enter it with a hyperdrive, you speed through it, and you come out billions of kilometers from where you started.
History
Not all hyperdrives are created equal, and that says a lot. A Goa'uld one is decent, an Asgard one is excellent, an Ancient one defies belief. A ship's range and speed alone tell you the level of the civilization that built it. In Stargate, mastering hyperspace means holding one of the keys to power in space.
