One detail in your DNA that changes everything. Ancient technology doesn't switch on for just anyone: you have to carry their gene. Without it, their wonders stay silent. With it, an ordinary human can awaken an entire city.
Overview
The Ancients locked their technology in a clever way: only a person carrying their gene can activate it. Control chairs, Jumpers, medical devices, weapons: nothing responds without that signature in the blood. It was their security measure, and millennia later, it has become a huge issue for those who inherit their treasures.
History
The problem is that the gene is rare. Very few people carry it naturally, like Sheppard, which makes them precious assets for the Atlantis expedition. Fortunately, science gets involved: a gene therapy, developed in large part by Beckett, makes it possible to pass it on to others, with varying degrees of success. A whole part of the adventure comes down to this question: who can, and who can't, awaken the legacy of the Ancients?
