Redemption (Part 2) is episode 2 of season 6 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2002.
The countdown continues: the gate is going to explode and take half the planet with it. Today's crazy plan: rip the ring off its base, hang it under an X-302 and send it into hyperspace far from Earth, a second before detonation. Meanwhile, Teal'c and Bra'tac strike at the heart of Anubis's device, where Rya'c finally earns his stripes as a warrior.
Why it matters to the mythology
Earth loses its original gate and replaces it with the one from Antarctica: the ring that will serve until the end of the series.
The review
A season-opening finale that dares to sacrifice the series' title object; that took nerve. Jettisoning the gate into hyperspace is a perfectly executed space set piece, and the warrior reconciliation between Teal'c and his son closes three seasons of family arc with panache. Jonas quietly makes his first real contribution. The series proves it can reinvent itself under pressure. Solid.
