Redemption (Part 1) is episode 1 of season 6 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2002.
Without Daniel, the team is looking for its fourth member, and Jonas Quinn, a Kelownan refugee consumed by his debt, volunteers without convincing anyone. The real problem is elsewhere: Anubis has found a way to attack Earth through the Stargate by overloading it remotely. The ring is building up the energy of a planet-killing bomb, and nothing can shut it down.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Jonas era begins, the X-302 flies for the first time, and Anubis proves he can strike Earth without a fleet.

The review
Picking up after Michael Shanks's departure was a risky exercise, and this opener handles it with honesty: nobody wants Jonas, and the series doesn't force the affection. The idea of the Stargate turned into a bomb is brilliant, a threat that turns our greatest asset against us. Rodney McKay coming back to play the killjoy opposite Carter is a treat. A dense, well-built first installment.
