Ex Deus Machina is episode 7 of season 9 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2005.
The surviving Goa'uld have found a fallback planet: Earth. Ba'al is hiding in the guise of a real estate tycoon, protected by the Trust he has turned, and the SGC has to hunt him down in the middle of a city without causing panic. Gerak, the new leader of the Jaffa council, wants his head too, and his methods worry less about collateral damage.
Why it matters to the mythology
Ba'al settles on Earth as a businessman: the former System Lord becomes an enemy within of a whole new kind.
The review
Ba'al in a suit and tie buying up skyscrapers is the season's brilliant idea: the fallen god recycled as a predator of capitalism, a world away from golden thrones. The rivalry with Gerak, playing cowboy in the middle of downtown, gives the episode its diplomatic tension. The tower collapsing live on television dares a powerful image. The serpent is among us, and he wears the suit better than anyone. A very good urban vintage.
