Babylon is episode 8 of season 9 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2005.
Mitchell, separated from his team, is captured by the Sodan: legendary Jaffa, free for five thousand years, entrenched behind a network of transporters. Wounded in a duel by their champion, he has to train for kel shak lo, the ritual combat that will decide his life, while yesterday's opponent becomes his weapons master.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Sodan enter the stage: the first free Jaffa in history, soon courted by the Priors. Their cloaking technology will come in handy again.
The review
The episode that truly establishes Mitchell: stripped of his team and his gadgets, reduced to taking hits and learning, Ben Browder earns his dramatic stripes here. Sodan culture, monastic and warlike, enriches the Jaffa world with a fascinating variation, purists who achieved what Teal'c dreams of. The final duel, staged with Western-style elegance, avoids the trap of an easy triumph. Very good character development under cover of martial arts.
