Avalon (Part 1) is episode 1 of season 9 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2005.
A new face at the SGC: Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell, hero of the Battle of Antarctica, has chosen his dream posting, SG-1... only to discover the team has scattered. While he tries to reunite the legend, Vala Mal Doran resurfaces with a bracelet that physically binds her to Daniel and a treasure map: Avalon, Merlin's hiding place on Earth, buried beneath Glastonbury.
Why it matters to the mythology
Mitchell and Landry take up their posts, Vala moves in for good, and the Ancients' Arthurian trail opens up: the series enters a new era.

The review
Relaunching SG-1 without O'Neill was a leap without a net, and Ben Browder sticks the landing: his Mitchell, a fanboy of the team he has to lead, defuses any comparison from the start. The Daniel-Vala duo, chained together by Kor mak bracelets, runs on cheeky chemistry, and the Arthurian turn, Merlin as an exiled Ancient, opens up a brand-new mythological playground. It's off again, and faster than we'd hoped.
