Avalon (Part 2) is episode 2 of season 9 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2005.
In the cave of Avalon, Merlin's trials guard a treasure more dangerous than gold: a long-range communication device. Daniel and Vala hook themselves up to it... and wake up in the bodies of a village couple, in a distant galaxy where heretics are burned. Their crime: doubting the Ori, gods who demand worship on pain of the stake.
Why it matters to the mythology
First contact with the Ori galaxy: ascended beings who chose the exact opposite of the Ancients, to be worshipped. The new enemy is theological.
First appearance
The Ori (concept), the Priors, the Book of Origin
The review
The relaunch's boldest idea: replacing false gods with real ones, or nearly. The Ori don't lie the way the Goa'uld do; they are genuinely transcendent, and that is infinitely more terrifying. The village of Ver Isca, with its calm book burnings and leaden piety, brings a theocratic horror new to the franchise. Daniel and Vala, as a borrowed couple, risk their lives with every prayer. The series has just found its final enemy, and it's genuinely scary.
