Lost City (Part 1) is episode 21 of season 7 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2003.
The Abydos tablet speaks of a Lost City where the power of the Ancients lies sleeping, and Anubis mobilizes everything that flies to find it before Earth does. Facing a dead end, O'Neill makes the decision everyone dreads: putting his head into an Ancient repository of knowledge again, knowing this time that his brain won't survive it. The countdown to his own extinction begins.
Why it matters to the mythology
O'Neill downloads the knowledge of the Ancients a second time: Earth's ultimate weapon is a man fading away one word at a time.
The review
The first half of the series' summit: the evening at Jack's place, beers, silences and unspoken loyalties, on the eve of the sacrifice, may be the finest team scene of all eight seasons. Richard Dean Anderson plays the gradual fading with heartbreaking economy; every Ancient word that replaces a human one sounds like a goodbye. And Kinsey thinking he's triumphed in Washington while real power is being written elsewhere: what delicious irony. A perfect build-up of tension.
