Maternal Instinct is episode 20 of season 3 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1999.
The trail of the Harcesis child leads to Kheb, a legendary world where even the Goa'uld dare not set foot. SG-1 finds a temple there, an enigmatic monk, and a presence beyond anything the team has encountered: Oma Desala, a being of pure energy. To earn the child, Daniel will have to unlearn everything he thinks he knows about strength.
Why it matters to the mythology
The first encounter with ascended beings and the concept of ascension: the keystone of the entire Ancient mythology has just been laid.
First appearance
Oma Desala, Kheb, ascension (as a concept)
The review
The most zen episode of the series, and one of the most important without our knowing it yet. The final showdown, where Oma strikes down the Jaffa while the monk recites his paradoxes, has a serene beauty that contrasts with everything the series had produced up to that point. Daniel giving up the child to save him is Shifu's lesson ahead of its time. All of post-2000 Stargate, ascension, the Ancients, even Daniel's own fate, is born in this temple. Dizzying in hindsight.
