New Ground is episode 19 of season 3 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1999.
An explosion as they exit the wormhole leaves Teal'c blind and stranded on a world locked in an ideological cold war: the people of Optrica and Bedrosia have been tearing each other apart for generations over the origin of their species, and the Stargate is the proof that shatters one side's dogma. Taken in by a heretic scientist, Teal'c becomes the prize in a battle of beliefs.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode, but its parallel is crystal clear: swap the Stargate for a fossil, and you've got all our creationism debates.
The review
Stargate does old-school science fiction: take a debate from right here at home, creationism versus evidence, and move it to an alien world to dissect it better. A blind, vulnerable Teal'c is a welcome change to the dynamic, and the researcher who sacrifices everything for the truth is touching. The pace sags in places and the Bedrosian uniforms raise a smile, but the message hasn't aged a day.
