Shades of Grey is episode 18 of season 3 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1999.
O'Neill starts stealing equipment, insulting his friends and dealing with the worst smugglers: the SGC's hero has gone bad, to the point of being kicked out of the program. The truth lies elsewhere: it's a secretly ordered undercover operation to expose the NID ring that's robbing Earth's allies. But for the cover to hold, even Carter, Daniel and Teal'c have to believe it.
Why it matters to the mythology
The NID's rogue off-world network is decapitated, and the series weighs the cost of deception within the team itself.
The review
Watching O'Neill turn obnoxious is a shock calibrated to the millimeter: every cruel line hurts because it hits its mark. The reveal of the undercover op doesn't dissolve the discomfort, and that's the episode's strength: wounds inflicted under cover are still wounds. Maybourne as the ambiguous linchpin is perfect, and the NID arc finally gets its muscular conclusion. An episode with guts and consequences.
