Crystal Skull is episode 21 of season 3 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1999.
A crystal skull discovered on P7X-377 throws Daniel into a ghostly state: invisible, inaudible, intangible, he wanders the SGC unable to touch anyone. His only hope is his grandfather Nick Ballard, the archaeologist committed to an institution for swearing he saw the same thing in Belize thirty years earlier. The family's madman was right all along.
Why it matters to the mythology
The mist giants and their civilization join the map of great friendly races, and Daniel makes peace with his family history.
First appearance
Nick Ballard, the giants of P7X-377
The review
A classic ghost story saved by its heart: the reconciliation between Daniel and the grandfather who abandoned him for an obsession everyone took for madness. Jan Rubes is wonderful as the cracked but dignified old scholar. The massive pyramid interior says a lot about the production designers' ambition. It's not the episode of the century, but it tenderly closes a wound left open since season 1.
