Nemesis is episode 22 of season 3 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1999.
Thor appears in O'Neill's office, but not to hand out a medal: his ship, in Earth orbit, is infested with Replicators, mechanical spiders that devour technology and multiply endlessly. The Asgard, too advanced to think simply, are losing the war against them. The solution is O'Neill: dumb gunpowder projectiles against intelligent blocks.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Replicators enter the scene as a next-level threat: the enemy that terrifies those who protect us.

The review
What a stroke of genius, these critters. In a single episode, the series creates a radically new enemy, neither god nor army, just a faceless mechanical hunger with no possible negotiation, and flips every power dynamic: the all-powerful Asgard come begging for our primitiveness. The Beliskner breaking up in the atmosphere is a spectacular finale, and the cliffhanger leaves Teal'c and O'Neill hanging in the void. Season 3 ends by opening the door to the franchise's future.
