Small Victories is episode 1 of season 4 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2000.
A Replicator survived the Beliskner crash and has infested a Russian submarine: O'Neill and Teal'c go down to clean it out by hand, compartment by compartment. Meanwhile, Thor takes Carter to the other end of the galaxy: the Asgard homeworld is about to fall, and their last hope lies in the deliciously primitive brain of an Earthling.
Why it matters to the mythology
Earth discovers it can save its protectors: Carter traps the Replicators with the most beautiful stupid idea of her career.
The review
A two-tier season opener that works on both levels. The submarine offers a real horror chamber piece, dark and metallic, with critters in every corner, while the Asgard storyline gleefully reverses the roles: Carter promoted to consultant to the gods. Her plan, luring the horde with bait and blowing the whole thing up, is a triumph of Earthling resourcefulness. The series enters its maturity with a wry smile.
