The Other Side is episode 2 of season 4 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2000.
Euronda calls for help: its people are dying out in a bunker, crushed by a faceless enemy. The Eurondans offer their technology in exchange for heavy water, and the deal seems too good to be true. It is: the more the team learns about this war, the more the word purity comes out of their new friends' mouths, and the deal of the century becomes a moral trap.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode, but it sets a golden rule for the program: no technology is worth allying with monsters.
The review
One of the series' most effective moral episodes, precisely because it traps us along with the heroes: we want to believe in those shields and those unmanned aircraft. The gradual reveal of Eurondan eugenics is very well paced, and O'Neill's about-face, brutal and without speeches, reminds us that the series has a backbone. The lesson to Daniel, ask all the questions, will serve as a compass for a long time.
