Thor's Hammer is episode 9 of season 1 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1997.
On Cimmeria, a world straight out of a Viking saga, any Goa'uld who comes through the gate is instantly trapped in an underground labyrinth. Teal'c and O'Neill are sent there by mistake and discover Thor's Hammer, a technology that protects humans from false gods. To free Teal'c, they'll have to destroy this people's only line of defense.
Why it matters to the mythology
The first trace of the Asgard, Earth's future great allies, and the first proof that the Goa'uld have enemies more powerful than themselves.
First appearance
The Asgard (as a hologram), Cimmeria, the Unas
The review
This is why we rewatch season 1 despite its wrinkles. A Viking world, an underground labyrinth, a primordial Unas lying in wait and, by way of a hologram, the very first glimpse of an Asgard. The episode raises a question that will run through the whole series: what if humans weren't the only ones who hated the Goa'uld? The final dilemma, destroying the Hammer to save Teal'c and leaving Cimmeria defenseless, is one of the team's first real crises of conscience. Worldbuilding just the way I like it, generous and full of consequences.
