Brief Candle is episode 8 of season 1 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1997.
On Argos, a sun-drenched people live life in fast-forward: they are born, love and die in about a hundred days. Tricked by a wedding cake laced with nanites, O'Neill unknowingly marries the lovely Kynthia and starts aging at breakneck speed. While Carter and Fraiser search for a cure, Jack learns to live at the pace of a world where every day is a whole lifetime.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: an abandoned Goa'uld experiment with no follow-up in the mythology.
The review
The aging makeup has, fittingly, aged, but I have a guilty soft spot for this fable. The idea of lives on fast-forward is a beautiful one, and watching O'Neill gradually accept his fate gives the character a depth that his constant wisecracks usually hide. It's not essential, it's sometimes naive, but it's the kind of quiet episode that let 22-episode seasons breathe.
