Emancipation is episode 3 of season 1 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1997.
On Simarka, a world modeled on the Mongolian steppes, women live veiled and are traded like property. Barely off the ramp, Carter is kidnapped, sold and promised to a clan leader, while the team negotiates her release, juggling customs that disgust them. Sam ends up settling the matter her own way, fists first, in a duel fans still talk about.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode with no ties to the big story. It does, however, establish how the series looks at societies descended from peoples taken from Earth.
The review
Let's be honest: this is the episode everyone points to as the weak spot of season 1. The bargain-bin anthropology, the costume-shop outfits and the heavy-handed moral have aged very badly. I'll salvage two things: Amanda Tapping refusing to play the damsel in distress and turning every humiliating scene into a show of character, and the final duel, which at least has the merit of being a lot of fun. Completists only.
