The Enemy Within is episode 2 of season 1 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1997.
A Goa'uld symbiote took up residence in Major Kawalsky's body during the mission to Chulak. As the SGC tries the impossible to save one of its own, Teal'c has to prove his loyalty to soldiers who still see him as the enemy. The episode closes on a sacrifice that reminds us this war will come at a heavy price.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Goa'uld threat gets personal: the enemy can be in our own ranks. Teal'c earns his place in SG-1.
The review
The episode that builds on the pilot's promise. Kawalsky getting infected is the early seasons' cruel stroke of genius: barely promoted, barely likable, already doomed. The show proves it won't pull punches, that the Goa'uld aren't villains of the week but an intimate horror that steals your body. Meanwhile, Teal'c takes everyone's suspicion on the chin with the granite dignity that will become his trademark. Not the most spectacular episode, but one of the most important for understanding the tone of the series.
