Within the Serpent's Grasp is episode 21 of season 1 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1997.
Barred from going on the mission, SG-1 disobeys and steps through the gate to the coordinates Daniel brought back. The team ends up aboard two motherships headed for Earth, with Apophis and Klorel, whose host is none other than Skaara, in command. The cliffhanger leaves the planet on the brink of annihilation.
Why it matters to the mythology
The first great season finale: the invasion of Earth begins, and the franchise shifts from exploration to open war against Apophis.
The review
What a finale. SG-1 openly disobeying orders, sneaking through the gate, and that rising dread when the team realizes they're not on a planet but on a ship bound for Earth. Skaara, possessed by Klorel, toying with Jack and Daniel's grief gives the action a terrible emotional weight. And that cliffhanger, one of the cruelest on TV at the time: our heroes stuck in the cargo hold of the apocalypse, roll credits. Waiting for season 2 was torture, and it was delicious.
