The Serpent's Lair is episode 1 of season 2 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1998.
Prisoners aboard Klorel's ship, O'Neill and his team have nothing left to lose: Earth is hours away from annihilation. As the world holds its breath, SG-1 sabotages the invasion from within, backed by Bra'tac, and escapes at the last second aboard Death Gliders. The two motherships explode in Earth's sky, and no one down below will ever know what the planet just escaped.
Why it matters to the mythology
The conclusion of the first invasion of Earth: Apophis loses his fleet, the series earns its stripes, and the world remains unaware of the program.
The review
The resolution the cliffhanger deserved. No magic wand: a desperate plan, explosives, and Bra'tac stealing the show with infectious glee. Here the series grasps something essential, that victory has to cost something and be earned, and that Death Glider escape will remain one of SG-1's founding images. Twenty-five years later, this season premiere still holds up without blushing.
