First Strike is episode 20 of season 3 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2006.
Earth launches a preemptive strike: the Apollo bombards Asuras, and the Replicators' response takes the form of an interstellar beam aimed at Atlantis, powered by a satellite gate. The shield melts day after day, and only one option remains, the craziest of all: wake the star drive and lift the city off. Atlantis tears itself out of its ocean... and is lost in the void, wounded and adrift.
Why it matters to the mythology
Atlantis flies: the city leaves its planet under Asuran fire, Weir is gravely wounded, and the season closes in hyperspace with zero power.
The review
A finale that dares to uproot the series in the strictest sense: watching the entire city rise above the ocean, spires streaming under the impacts, remains one of the most grandiose shots in the whole franchise. Earth's preemptive strike, military hubris with immediate consequences, gives the disaster a flavor of shared responsibility. And the final fade, Weir between life and death, the city lost among the stars, ticks every box of the great cliffhanger. A season that ends on a high.
