Adrift is episode 1 of season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2007.
Atlantis drifts in the void, engines dead, its shield reduced to a bubble around the central tower, and Weir lies dying in intensive care. Every hour forces an impossible choice: shut down sections, sacrifice potential wounded, reinvent navigation. The only way to save Elizabeth is nauseating: reactivate the Asuran nanites sleeping in her blood.
Why it matters to the mythology
Weir is revived as part machine: the decision by Keller and McKay, taken against all instructions, seals the character's fate.
The review
A disaster episode of remarkable tension, where the enemy is arithmetic: so much power, so much air, so much time. The spacewalk on the hull with asteroids approaching provides the big visual thrill, but the real vertigo is ethical: reactivating Weir's nanites without her consent, a decision by panicked friends with irreversible consequences. The series opens its season by gambling its leader on a roll of the dice. Breathless and heavy with consequences.
