A man, a symbiote, and a love that isn't really his own. Martouf is the human face of the Tok'ra: a loyal ally bound to Sam Carter by the memories of a dead woman. His story is one of the saddest in SG-1.
The face of the Tok'ra
The Tok'ra are symbiotes, like the Goa'uld, but they share their host's body instead of enslaving it. Martouf and his symbiote Lantash are the perfect example: two minds, mutual respect, one shared cause. He becomes one of the SGC's best contacts among this secretive people.
Another woman's love
Here's where it gets heartbreaking: Martouf loved Jolinar, the Tok'ra who briefly inhabited Sam Carter's body before dying. As a result, he has inherited feelings for Sam, and she keeps fragments of Jolinar's feelings for him. Between them lies the echo of a love that belongs to someone else. Unsettling, and beautiful.
A cruel end
Martouf's fate takes a turn when he is unknowingly turned into a weapon remote-controlled by the enemy. Sam is forced to make an impossible decision about him. His death leaves a bitter aftertaste, and confirms that in Stargate, even the gentlest bonds can end in blood.
