Threads is episode 18 of season 8 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2004.
Daniel wakes up in a diner outside of time, an antechamber to Ascension run by Oma Desala, where an old regular does crosswords: Anubis, half ascended, savoring his final plan, to fire the Dakara weapon and sterilize the galaxy. On Earth, Jacob Carter fades away with Selmak, Sam breaks up with Pete, and Oma makes the only decision the rules allow her: an eternal fight against her own sin.
Why it matters to the mythology
Jacob and Selmak die, Oma neutralizes Anubis for eternity, and Sam and Jack finally find each other with nothing in the way: the episode settles every account.
The review
The best episode of the season, and one of the most profound in the series. The metaphysical diner, with its ascended beings reading the paper while the galaxy burns, is a brilliant staging idea, and Oma's sacrifice, condemned to struggle against Anubis until the end of time to atone for her mistake, has the grandeur of Greek myth. Jacob's death, his hand in his daughter's, devastates me every time. And the peaceful silence between Sam and Jack by the lake finally says it all. A masterpiece.
