Moebius (Part 1) is episode 19 of season 8 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2004.
Digging through a looter's treasure turns up a five-thousand-year-old video camera... with SG-1 on it. To find a ZPM buried in ancient Egypt, the team borrows the time jumper and travels back to Giza, under Ra's reign. The trip goes off the rails: history is altered, and in the alternate present, a frustrated linguist Daniel, a shy Carter and a pike-fishing Jack have never opened the gate.
Why it matters to the mythology
The great final paradox: SG-1 rewrites its own origin and plants the ZPM that will power many tomorrows.
The review
The series' birthday present to itself: revisiting Giza, Ra and the first rebellion, closing the loop on the 1994 movie with TV means and a gleeful sense of play. The alternate versions of the heroes are a delight of self-parody, Daniel as a hapless professor and Carter as a desk mouse are pure gold, and the pleasure of watching them become themselves again is the finest statement about what the gate made of these people. An exhilarating first part.
