Heroes (Part 2) is episode 18 of season 7 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2003.
The mission has turned into a tragedy: under fire, treating a wounded man out in the open, Dr. Janet Fraiser has fallen. The SGC mourns its medical heart while the brass would like to bury the footage along with her. Bregman, for his part, finally understands his job: to bear witness. The documentary becomes the tribute the base can't put into words.
Why it matters to the mythology
The death of Janet Fraiser, seven seasons of devotion cut down in a second: the most unjust loss in the series.
The review
The episode that broke me. Janet's death is filmed the way it should be, brutal, without music, almost off screen, and Bregman's final edit, reciting the list of lives she saved while Carter weeps at the podium, is an absolute peak of televised emotion. The debate over the footage, whether to show or hide soldiers' deaths, raises the stakes even further. Teryl Rothery deserved this exit of complete dignity. The most beautiful episode of the series, and the most painful.
