Heroes (Part 1) is episode 17 of season 7 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2003.
An insufferable documentary maker arrives at the SGC: journalist Emmett Bregman is to film the program's daily life for posterity, amid forced interviews, closed doors and officers who dodge him. While he runs into the wall of secrecy, a rescue mission goes wrong off camera, and the polite smiles start to crack.
Why it matters to the mythology
The first half of the series' most meta and most human two-parter: the camera within the camera, before the tragedy.
The review
A deceptively light episode that documents its own series: Bregman irritates, questions and forces everyone to say what they're doing there, and the answers make up the finest group portrait ever painted of the SGC. The contrast between the comedy of the interviews and the dull worry rising from the corridors is orchestrated to the millimeter. You laugh a lot, and that's exactly the trap the second part will spring on us. Fiendishly well built.
