Ascension is episode 3 of season 5 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2001.
On a deserted world, an invisible consciousness attaches itself to Carter and follows her back to Earth: Orlin, an Ancient banished for once helping a people defend themselves with a forbidden weapon. Taking human form again out of love, he camps out in Sam's living room, builds a mini Stargate in her basement out of online purchases, and will have to face the ghosts of his mistake.
Why it matters to the mythology
Orlin clarifies the laws of the Ascended, non-interference and its price, and the Velona file will weigh on Ancient mythology.
The review
A strange, gentle science fiction romance, mostly worth it for what it reveals about Carter: a woman whose whole life is her work, embarrassed by a love that has fallen from the sky, literally. The mini-gate assembled from express deliveries is a brilliant idea that makes physicists scream and everyone else smile. Orlin's final sacrifice hits home. Minor in the context of the season, but full of charm.
