Entity is episode 20 of season 4 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2000.
A probe brings back an electromagnetic entity that settles into the SGC's systems, learns, grows... and then jumps into Carter's brain. The base has to choose between destroying the intruder and killing Sam with it, or negotiating with a life form born of computers. The entity, for its part, was only responding to what it perceived as an attack: our exploration probes.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode with a lasting point: for some worlds, Earth is the invader, and our MALPs are acts of war.
The review
An excellent tech chamber piece that dares to make our heroes the unwitting aggressors of the story. A possessed Carter typing messages in the third person is bone-chilling, and O'Neill's dilemma, shooting his favorite scientist to save the base, is played without showboating. The entity's final sacrifice, saving Sam by exiling itself in a server before being erased, has a quiet, well-earned sadness. Underrated.
