Prodigy is episode 19 of season 4 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2000.
Carter spots a gifted, unmanageable cadet, Jennifer Hailey, and takes her to see the one thing capable of setting her genius straight: the Stargate. On an off-world science base, previously harmless luminous entities start attacking, and the two women have to improvise. Raw talent learns humility, experience learns trust.
Why it matters to the mythology
Hailey will return to the program's orbit: the series is starting to prepare its next generation behind the scenes.
The review
A pleasant episode about passing the torch, in which Carter discovers she's mentoring a more arrogant version of her younger self. The killer fireflies are, let's be honest, a forgettable antagonist, and the science plot could fit on a postage stamp. But the dynamic between Sam and Hailey rings true, and seeing the series wonder who will take over has something touching about it. Minor but endearing.
