The Devil You Know is episode 13 of season 3 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1999.
Trapped on Netu, SG-1 and Jacob fall into the hands of a ghost from the past: Apophis, sheltering with Sokar under a false show of loyalty, who plans to get back on his feet by handing over the team. While the fallen false god interrogates his prisoners with a memory drug, the Tok'ra make a radical decision: blow up Netu, with everyone on it if necessary.
Why it matters to the mythology
Sokar dies, but something worse takes hold: Apophis takes back his throne and his army. The series has just invented its great comeback.
The review
The conclusion delivers on the descent's promise. Apophis as a snarling survivor is more dangerous than ever, and the Tok'ra bomb drop, coldly condemning our heroes along with the moon, shows an alliance willing to make the most cynical calculations. The split-second escape is great serialized storytelling. You come out of this two-parter with a delightful realization: the series can do big spectacle without losing its characters along the way.
