Jolinar's Memories is episode 12 of season 3 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1999.
Jacob/Selmak has gone missing on a mission to Netu, Sokar's hellish moon, from which no one returns. To pull him out, SG-1 willingly descends into hell, guided by the memories of Jolinar, the only person ever to escape the place. In the furnace, among the damned and a one-eyed overlord, Carter also discovers how Jolinar escaped, and the price she paid.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Goa'uld's infernal mythology takes shape, and Jolinar's memories push Carter through an intimate, painful milestone.
The review
Stargate does its own Divine Comedy and pulls it off remarkably well: Netu is sticky, glowing red, oppressive, a far cry from the usual Canadian forests. The journey into Jolinar's memories gives Amanda Tapping some intensely powerful scenes, and Bynarr, the one-eyed jailer, makes for a believable petty lord of the underworld. A very successful first half of a descent that dares to get its heroes dirty.
